Bruce McGowan creates contemporary baroque surrealism—maximalist paintings where detail excess collides with dreamlike disruption. Drawing on Pop Surrealism's narrative density and classical baroque composition, he builds organized chaos: compositions that seduce with their density while revealing deliberate structure beneath the visual abundance.
His process begins with spontaneous under-drawings that serve as intuitive scaffolding, resisting calculated overthinking in favor of what he calls capturing the "present vibe"—an instinctive register of cultural atmosphere. Working in oils and metallic pigments, McGowan layers traditional and modern materials, allowing each composition to unfold organically through chromatic experimentation and material contrast. The result is a baroque visual density reimagined for contemporary consumption: sugar-coated critique that draws viewers close before asking them to digest the complexity beneath.
McGowan's dual practice as an advertising Creative Director informs his artistic approach.
Trained in conceptual design and cartooning, he applies the visual precision and strategic thinking of commercial image-making to fine art contexts, creating work that operates simultaneously as spectacle and cultural commentary. His paintings exist in the space between immediate seduction and formal investigation—beauty laced with tension, structure hidden within abundance.
Based in Montreal, McGowan has exhibited internationally, including at Sotheby's New York and the Ad Art Shows. His work has been featured in Hi-Fructose and shown in galleries and art fairs across the United States.
